Ain’t Love a Kick in the Head

Funny title, but a very serious topic. I’ve heard some pretty disturbing stories from friends lately, about love and violence. Like how a man kicking in a door and ripping down a shower curtain while his girlfriend was in the shower was “not that bad” because he didn’t hit her. How it could have been “much worse”. Being the victim of domestic violence myself, stories like these make my stomach ache and have the potential to ruin my whole day. It’s never okay to put your hands on someone else. But in recent weeks I keep hearing more and more stories like these:
“He slammed me into the bed and broke it on accident”
“He would leave bruises but we were playing”

“She would hit me in front of my friends… but she’s so much smaller than me”

If you are reading this and being abused, you don’t deserve that shit. I know it’s hard to get away and you may need help, but you need to get away. They may say they’ll change, or they’re sorry but don’t risk your life waiting for a change that may never happen. If they’ve done it once, they’ll probably do it again. And if you’re a man and you feel embarrassed, please don’t. Just because someone is smaller and weaker or bigger and stronger than you it doesn’t give them the right to hurt you.

It’s not a joke, and it will never be funny. I know what it’s like to be hurt by someone who claims to love you. I was shaken off a bar stool, chased down the street, and had to literally hide in bushes to get away. And that’s glossing over some of the details that are hard for me to talk about. My point is you deserve love that doesn’t hurt. Please be safe.
